The story she told was of her brother, our Uncle Louie who was overseas during WWII, calling home just before the holidays. They were telling him how much they were missing him and how they wished he could be home for Christmas. He asked if they had heard this song. They said yes, and he said something like that he would be home for Christmas, if only in his heart.
He returned home safely, then a couple of years later, while working at General Electric in Erie, PA, he climbed to untangle electrical cords that had become tangled, and was electrocuted. I was about 14 months old, and I remember it like it just happened yesterday. It was a truly heartbreaking day, and I miss him still because he was my greatest champion!
Our mother always treasured that song, often weeping whenever it would play on the radio - as I still do, remembering them both, and I am so blessed that she shared that story with me.
